Situated on the panoramic Piazza del Municipio in Lipari Town (near il Castello, a fortified citadel that houses several sites including the Aeolian Archaeological Museum), Filippino offers a rustic setting with a pleasant atmosphere. It perfectly interprets the excellence of the Aeolian flavour. This centenarian historic restaurant is nowadays modern and functional, it is composed of two rooms and a big air-conditioned terrace.
The period piece of furniture (dark massive wooden and soft colors) is sober and elegant with a fireplace.
The specialities are mainly linked to the sea (regional food), with dishes with fresh fish and raw materials of the island such as the vegetables and the oil, which enhance the flavour. Furthermore, the restaurant has an excellent wine cellar proposing more than 100 labels and more than 80 grappe (a grape-derived pomace brandy). It can welcome up to 250 people. A warm welcome and the customer satisfaction is part of our philosophy: today like at the beginning of the 20th century.
The restaurant has opened in 1910 and it was managed by the famous Filippo Bernardi; it was called “Belvedere”, a modest trattoria proposing dishes made from fishes. With the boom of the Aeolian Islands after the war, the restaurant changed name and has become a gastronomic reference. The myth of the Aeolian Islands was born during the years of the neorealism (and movies such as “Vulcano” in 1950 with Anna Magnani and “Stromboli” with Ingrid Bergman and directed by Rossellini). The founders of the Republic often sat down in the tables of the restaurant: the Rosselli brothers, Basso, Parri as well as Edda Ciano. A legend says that the painter Monet left one of his paintings as a pledge of payment.
The fame of the restaurant has been growing during the second half of the 20th century, it asserts itself as the mainstay of the Mediterranean flavours. Today it is managed by the descendants of the famous Filippo Bernardi: Antonio, Lucio, Antonio jr. and Filippo. A rite always repeats with the ingredients of the tradition: welcoming, listening, customer satisfaction and quality.
